Dave Nolin received the Wallace I. Edwards Conservationist of the Year Award at the Three Valley Conservation Trust Annual Meeting on January 31 at the Fitton Center in Hamilton.
Dave Nolin, conservation director for Five Rivers MetroParks in Montgomery County Ohio, has worked tirelessly for almost 30 years preserving and restoring natural spaces in the Miami Valley. His commitment to conservation initiatives of all scales and scopes, both locally and nationally, has been unwavering. While working with Five Rivers MetroParks; Dave has also been involved with organizations such as the Beavercreek Wetlands, Glen Helen Nature Center, Three Valley Conservation Trust and numerous academic research projects through Wright State University. His collaboration with other public and non-profit conservation groups as well as the local academic community has earned respect for Five Rivers MetroParks and Dave’s work as a conservationist.
Dave has been a leader in recognizing that conservation easements and other landowner agreements help support Five Rivers MetroParks’ mission of protecting the Miami Valley’s natural heritage. This is one of the areas in which Dave has worked with Three Valley Conservation Trust, helping establish conservation easements that protect productive farmland, conservation areas along river corridors and sensitive natural features deserving of protection as a part of the region’s natural heritage.
Thanks to his efforts, thousands of acres of native habitat have been protected and restored. These accomplishments have led to bringing new and increasing audiences into Five Rivers MetroParks facilities to enjoy hiking, wildlife watching, biking, boating, fishing and volunteer opportunities. Many of these outdoor pursuits are opportunities that, years ago, would not have been linked with living in Dayton or Montgomery County. Dave’s contribution to expanding these opportunities has changed how many residents look at this region from an outdoor recreation perspective. Dave has simultaneously established guidelines that assure these activities are conducted in ways that don’t threaten the natural integrity of these parklands, as he understands the responsibility to pass on these parklands to future generations in a healthy and sustainable condition.
